SAILING ACROSS SURFACES

The program of this coastal building is the observation, broadcast, and administration of sailboat races, specifically the America’s Cup Regatta. Like an Olympic or World’s Fair building, its use after the special event is to be for regional and national sailing regattas, as well as entertainment and dining. Because boat design represents the apex of a synthesis of performance, materials, technology, and beauty, the class began by researching the surface design of hulls, sails, and mechanical components. The ambition was to combine surface modeling research with long span structural design and a waterfront landscape. Each project needed to offer not only an iconic image from the waterfront, but also architectural experiences at a smaller, more immediate scale. My building uses twisting, ridged surfaces to generate movement, enveloping the spectator in the spirit of sailing. A metallic surface creates outdoor rooms, providing shade and framed views of the races. The base of the surface undulates, touching the ground at points to invite visitors onto it.
